WhatsApp honey trap sextortion scam - lost ₹1,07,173 in Agra

I am writing this anonymously but my name is Amit Mukherjee, I am from Agra, and I want to warn every man in India about this. I matched with a woman claiming to be a fashion designer in Mumbai on Facebook. The conversation was wonderful - we talked about life, career, family. After a few days, she said "I don't use this app much, let's talk on WhatsApp" and gave me a +91 number. On WhatsApp, the conversations became more personal and flirtatious over 2 weeks. After two weeks of chatting, she suggested we move to a video call on WhatsApp. During the call, she started removing her clothes and asked me to do the same. I did not realize the call was being screen-recorded. The next day I received a message from a different number with my screenshots and video clips, saying "We have your intimate video. We will send it to all your Facebook friends, your LinkedIn connections, and your family members. We have already identified your wife on social media." They demanded ₹42,869 immediately. I was terrified and paid via PhonePe. But it did not stop - they came back asking for more. "The video is still with us. Pay ₹32,152 more or we release it tomorrow." This cycle continued 6 times until I had paid ₹1,07,173 total. I was so ashamed I could not tell anyone for weeks. Finally I broke down and told my brother who immediately took me to file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in and the 1930 helpline. The cyber police told me this is a massive organized racket operating from West Bengal border areas. They said the "woman" on video was likely using pre-recorded footage or deepfake filters. The police advised: never engage in intimate video calls with strangers, never pay blackmailers (they never delete the content), and report immediately. I lost ₹1,07,173 from my Union Bank savings. The shame and mental trauma was worse than the financial loss. If this is happening to you right now - stop paying, screenshot everything, and call 1930 immediately. The police handle these cases confidentially.

WhatsApp stock trading group scam - lost ₹4,10,346 in Kochi

I am Ravi Das from Kochi, working as a software engineer. Someone added me to a WhatsApp group called "Options Trading Expert Group" without my permission. The group had 412 members and every day the admins would post stock tips with screenshots showing 50-100% returns in a single day. There was a person claiming to be from "SEBI Certified Trader Mohit Sir" who said they had a SEBI-registered advisory license (I later checked - completely fake). For the first week I just watched. Members kept posting screenshots of their profits - "₹10,000 invested yesterday, ₹25,000 today!" with BHIM UPI payment screenshots. It looked so real. They said the "free tips" group was just a demo, and for "premium VIP calls" I needed to invest through their platform "StockMaster AI" - a website that looked professional with live Nifty charts, portfolio tracker, and withdrawal history. I started with ₹61,552 and within the first week my dashboard showed 40% profit. Excited, I invested more. Over two months I put in a total of ₹4,10,346. My dashboard showed my portfolio at ₹10,25,865. When I tried to withdraw, they said I needed to pay "capital gains tax" upfront - 20% of profits. Then a "withdrawal processing fee." Then "SEBI compliance deposit." The platform went offline one morning and the WhatsApp group was deleted. All 231 "members" posting profits were fake accounts run by the same scam ring. I filed complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, called 1930, and also filed with SEBI. I took a personal loan from IndusInd Bank to invest this money. Now I have the loan EMI and zero returns. Please - no real SEBI-registered advisor operates through WhatsApp groups or asks you to invest in unregulated platforms. Check any advisor's registration at sebi.gov.in before trusting them.

WhatsApp OTP theft and account takeover in Ludhiana

I am Prakash Desai, 26 years old, from Ludhiana. What happened to me sounds so simple but destroyed my digital life for weeks. I received a WhatsApp message from my neighbour's number (their account was already hacked, I later found out) saying "Hey Prakash, I am so sorry - I made a mistake and entered your number instead of mine for a verification. You will get a 6-digit OTP on SMS. Can you please share it? It is really urgent, I need it for my bank account verification." I trusted this person completely because the message came from their WhatsApp account with their profile photo and status. Without thinking twice, I shared the OTP that came to my phone. Within seconds, I was logged out of WhatsApp. The scammer now had full control of my WhatsApp account with all my 106 contacts, my group chats, my shared photos and documents. They joined scam groups using my account to make it look legitimate. The financial damage was severe - they used my KYC documents from WhatsApp chats to open fake accounts and take loans of ₹3,76,150. I immediately called 1930 cybercrime helpline and went to the nearest cyber police station. I also emailed WhatsApp support at support@whatsapp.com to deactivate my account. It took 7 days to recover my account. I also had to visit my ICICI Bank branch to block unauthorized transactions. The police told me this is the most common WhatsApp scam in India right now - the OTP is YOUR WhatsApp login code. Never share any OTP with anyone, even if the request comes from someone you know. Call them on a regular phone call first to verify. I also enabled two-step verification on WhatsApp (Settings > Account > Two-step verification) - please do this right now if you haven't already.
